The first nucleus of the Romolo Murri Library-Archive in Gualdo was established immediately after the suspension at divinis, when the young priest was forced to move into the home of his uncle, who was a parish priest, bringing with him the “remains of the ancient shipwreck”, papers and documents about the first political experience of the historical Christian democracy. Additions continued to be made to the original nucleus, books and papers and other materials were relocated from Rome together with important parts of the library and of the magazine collection.
Before his death, in 1941, an important part of the library and of the archive was located in Gualdo. Murri did not manage to fully establish the archive during his lifetime; immediately after his death the archive was split between two locations: the “ancient” fund in Gualdo, and in Rome, in the house on the Aventino, the more recent nucleus. After the sale of the house in Rome, the nucleus of the archive preserved there was in part reunited with the one in Gualdo.
In 1990 the “Romolo Murri” study centre was founded, which launched important research and promotion activity.
In May 1993, the Archival Superintendence of the Marche, in the person of Doctor Mario Biondi, declared the Gualdo archive to be of “remarkable historic interest”.
In 1998 the Gualdo Study Centre, with the collaboration of the Provincial authorities of Macerata and the CARIMA Foundation, acquired the Library and Archive from the Murri family, with an extended loan of free use for thirty years of the premises in which these are located. The ownership was transferred in 1998.
Meanwhile, the earthquake that upset the zone in 1997 also destroyed the Murri home and over the years, without appropriate interventions, it became unusable. The Study Centre saw to the task of locating the right premises, to which, in 2007, the Library and Archive were transferred.
The most important job to be done over recent years was the computerised cataloguing of the Archive, under the supervision of the regional Superintendence, and the computerised cataloguing of the Library.

Objective data
The library has more than 6,425 volumes and a precious collection of many magazines published or bought by Murri between the end of XIX century and the first half of XX century.
There are 5,871 monographs catalogued as modern books; there are 375 monographs catalogued as ancient books; there are 179 magazine mastheads.
The historical interest is outstanding, considering the fact that the library belonged to Murri, who collected volumes that narrate fifty years of Italian and European history, from 1890 to 1944. The library is catalogued in twenty-six sections that range from philosophy, to religion, to politics, to sociology. The volumes of the catholic and modernism sections are interesting, as well as the magazines, requests for which also come from abroad, because this is rare material that is not available even in the bigger libraries.
Among the ancient monographs there are some theological texts, a Bible, a work dating from 1686 about the Council of Trent, some works translated from French dating back to 1778, a volume dating back to 1826 “Rime del Tetrarca” commented by Giacomo Leopardi. The archive, the cataloguing of which is still in progress, is composed of 6,000 papers, connected especially to the period that goes from 1910 to 1944, distinguished in about 30 positions, amounting to a total of 2,500 cataloguing records.

Main positions:
Autobiography, National Examination of Conscience, Fascism, Christianity and History, a history of the murriano movement, War Time, Italian Christian Democracy, correspondence, essays and notes on the history of philosophy, unpublished writings.
The Library houses a collection with around 1,500 ancient postcards of an enormous historical and collectible value.
The journal collection is composed of catalogued documents on various themes or topics (263) and it completes the preciousness of the heritage of the Romolo Murri Library.
